Lol! I love the video!
ReplyDeleteAlright! I DID IT! Something I have always wanted to do, but whenever I started training my knees would fall apart…which led me to crossfit where my knees have never been an issue. But I wondered if crossfit training alone would prepare me for a longer challenge…a marathon! To cap it off, ten days earlier I finally made the switch to Paleo. (which totally stunk the 1st 2 days.) About 5 days in, I was feeling better, and thanks to you Cori, I was armed with the knowledge of how to prepare for a marathon eating paleo. I followed everything you said…
I had no expectations going onto the race. We had registered late so we were in the last corral and were literally the last people to cross over the starting line…which I mention because David and I spent A LOT of time and energy (left to right, on the grass, jumping small bushes) trying to pass thousands of walkers! The first 5 miles were the slowest, by mile 9 we were finally breaking out of the crowd. Yeah! By the way, the miles were just clicking by…”oh look there’s mile 13!” “look there is mile 16!” Once I broke away from the walkers (and my hubby!) I settled in at about a 9minute mile pace and felt comfortable.
I was eating the honey/raisins/ bananas/water you suggested, but even early on in the race, it would bother my stomach soooo I probably wasn’t taking in enough, about 60calories an hour. So as good as I felt through mile 20, it suddenly took a turn. At mile 20 I noticed my first signs of fatigue and dizziness. So I had to walk and eat (which I know you said to do) which caused my stomach to get upset with me so I continued to walk a couple of minutes. The last 2.2 miles took FOREVER! It was just like you said..."Where is that FINISH LINE!#*&$&*^#!!" My time 5hour 1 minute!
I am 3 days out and just a bit sore, my knees need rest. I don’t plan on putting them through this beating often, but I am ready to sign up for Disney Marathon 2011! Next time I hope to run a 4:30-4:45 race. Yes, I am happy with my time, even happier to report how easy the first 20 miles were! Crossfit + paleo works!
man, that is SO awesome!!! to tell you the truth, the first 5 miles probably saved you at the end! you would've gone out faster than you should have and bonked sooner than mile 22/23. that happened to me at the las vegas half marathon -- the walkers...argh! but it saved me in the end. it forced me to slow down at the beginning!
ReplyDeletewhen i ran my first full, i got to mile 20 at 3:08. i was like hell yeah...i'm gonna get a 4:08!!! i was fine at mile 21....then ok at 22...then slowly, slowly, slowly i could not run anymore. final time was 4:31. took me an hour and a half to "run" the last 10k. i don't think i could get that today as i ran a 1:34:16 10 mile run last week and it about killed me!
super proud paleo works!!!
i'm going to do a tri this year - half ironman. i'm going to get some swimming in and some biking on the weekends, but other than that i'm going to only train crossfit! we'll see how it goes!!!
Love love love that commercial!
ReplyDeleteCongrats Laura. I'm proud of you. I can't wait to hear more!
have you picked your tri yet cori? i think i'm going back to tackle augusta again - need to prove to myself i can do it better than before!
ReplyDeleteSo the bike you got...its a street bike? Are you a swimmer?
ReplyDeleteCongrats to those who can run a full marathon on just crossfit training! My expierence with a half marathon is a little different. I ran a half yesterday and realized I have reached my maximum PR distance on crossfit alone. For me it's a <10K for only crossfit. I have hit pr's on a 5k, 8k, and 10k without running. I discovered to beat PR's on longer distances I need some time on my feet on the road. By the time I got to mile 8 yesterday I started cramping. I could really see the benefit of distance training on running.
